6 Home Improvement Tips To Create the Style You Want

Style and taste are usually used synonymously and there is a reason behind it. Some people enjoy a specific meal or food, while others may find it unpleasant. This is because of the human sense of taste and we all have our own unique sense of taste.

Correspondingly, chefs and foodies are absolutely passionate about food while others don’t actually care that much about the flavour of what they eat (but the fact doesn’t change that they still have a sense of taste). This directly translates to style also.

With that being said, in this article, we’ll share our best yet easy tips on how you can determine your decorating style, as well as how you can achieve them if you’re on a budget.

1. Get inspiration from magazines

Pinterest is a great option too, however, there are plenty of beautiful images on Pinterest at one time and it can be pretty hard to zero in on a style that you are most attracted to. Rather, look through magazine pages one by one and cut out the pictures of rooms and houses that you are most drawn to. Just rip out the page with the design that you love, there’s no right or wrong about the style you’re going to choose.

Review what you tear out and determine what the images have in common.

2. Search your wardrobe

Take a look at your wardrobe and observe your favourite clothing items. Closely focus your attention and textures. Are most of them in neutral shades? You might prefer a neutral colour palette for your house. Or are your favourite clothes made with plenty of colour and bold patterns? If yes, then opt for the same look when picking textiles for your home.

3. Take a look at your house’s architecture

Go outside and start to take a look at the exteriors of your house, then work your way inside. Every house has a particular design style that is difficult to ignore when including your own touch. For example, if your home hits you as avant-garde— perhaps with thin glass walls and boundless, open floor plans— it can be a significant challenge to integrate a cosy, inviting style of warmth and comfort. Naturally, a log cabin in the woods is going to lean toward more-rural styles.

Identifying and understanding the style of your house does not require you to accept its style identity as your own but it will help you to recognize and consider as you incorporate your style in a complementary way.

4. Try an online quiz

There are so many online quizzes that are created to help you determine your decorating style. Pick a couple of design style quizzes you can answer in your free time. If most of these quizzes end in similar results, you are surely on the right track. They are fun to take and they can effectively help you define your style.

5. Create an inventory of your current decor

Have a little stroll around your house and take notes. Per room, try to create a list of art, furniture, accessories you like, and a separate list of those you want to replace. After that, assess the list of things you love to check what they have in common and write them down. Make sure you keep that list with you every time you buy something for your home as this will serve as a helpful guide to maintain your true style.

After you get a better idea of what your style is, you need to know a way to achieve it without the need to spend a fortune.

6. Consider the non-consumable purchase

There are plenty of opportunities you can create to determine your style. You can buy a shower curtain, storage trunk, or bedspread. Or maybe, you need to update a new dining table set? There are plenty of opportunities from placing artworks on the walls to your backsplash to your desk, which provides a chance for you to display your style.

The technique here is to recognize what your style is and then make a choice whether something you need or want exemplifies that. When you buy things for your home, will they fit in with the trends and patterns you observed in your style-book collections online? It’s important for you to be consistent when creating a defined style across your home.

However, if you’re a bit short on money and you can play the waiting game, the strategy you can do is to purchase “placeholders” which are cheap temporary items that can fulfil important functions. Perhaps, you’re looking for a coffee table but you can’t afford or find the right one that suits your style, you may consider buying an affordable placeholder like secondhand options or yard sales that will do its job until you find, or save up for a coffee table that will truly represent your style.
