Philosophy Dissertation Examples

As a student, you may want to learn about the most important principles of philosophy, such as the importance of strong arguments. This is because a philosophy paper needs to support its arguments with solid evidence. Every reader is skeptical, and a weak argument may not convince him or her. A masters dissertation help needs to be precise and not too broad or vague. Fortunately, there are several philosophy dissertation examples that can help you make a strong argument.

Metaphysics

Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that deals with the study of nature and reality. It is often referred to as the study of things. The concept of identity is often used in metaphysics to describe objects. For example, an object may be identical to its opposite. Another example of this principle is the principle of identity through time. This principle is central to Leibniz’s metaphysics.

The study of metaphysics has many definitions, and its field has expanded to address a variety of problems. In the past, metaphysics focused on defining the first principles of things. Often, the definitions were too broad and vague. In recent years, researchers have expanded the field to consider various problems, including quantum mechanics and the nature of the physical world.

In modern times, philosophers have recognized that there are two types of propositions: those that are true and those that are false. These categories are known as modalities. One type is true in any world, while the other is false. The latter is also known as a mode of necessity.

Metaphysicians differ on whether existence is a proper concept. Some claim that being and existence are the same, while others reject this distinction. For example, some philosophers claim that a fictional character or a Greek god do not exist, but their existence implies their existence. This view does not make sense to many people.

This includes the question of whether objects possess properties. While there are many examples of this, they are typically controversial. In reality, the most plausible examples are only as good as the thesis that the object possesses those properties.

Logic

Linear logic is a branch of philosophy developed by Girard, a philosopher who criticized both grammar and language and formulated an argument that is logical. This system is similar to Kant’s synthetic a priori, but it introduces tests for assertions. Furthermore, it models normative practice of logic.

Aristotle’s Topics contain evidence of stylized argumentative exchanges. They often refer to rule-governed procedures, and assume that the audience will recognize the rules. The arguments involve a questioner and an answerer, each of whom asserts a proposition and seeks concessions from the other.

Aristotle’s work on logic was influential during the Renaissance. Aristotle considered logic an extension of rhetoric, and its study of persuasion methods was highly valued by the Renaissance. There is a rich literature on Aristotle and his work. There is even an Aristotle-based book by Jonathan Lear. But there are many questions surrounding Aristotle’s work.

They are often based on principles of natural law and equality. This allows Jefferson to appeal to logic to argue for a more egalitarian society. For example, a company that aims to reduce childhood obesity among Hispanic children is based on logic.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was a political leader who believed that sex should only be used for procreation. He once slept with his grandniece while she was in her late teens. The man who rejected the western way of thinking was also a controversial figure who used his position in power to impose experiments on his followers.

As a leader, Gandhi recognized the depressed classes and sought to integrate them into the Hindu fold. He also saw caste as the social glue of Indian society, and thus, prioritized the unity of the Hindu community over equality for the Untouchables. As a result, the untouchables were renamed as ‘Harijans’ (‘untouchables’).

Apart from being a leader, Gandhi also broke down the barriers between castes and communities in India. Unlike most political leaders, he stressed the need for unity among all people. Gandhi believed that if people work together, the world will be better. His ideal would be a world where people live in peace and harmony.

Gandhi’s ideas are also relevant today. For example, he believed that a society’s prosperity should be dependent on its people.

Gandhi’s philosophy was a mixture of religion and philosophy. In his own words, “religion is a codebook of moral conduct”. In Gandhi’s case, the religious element of Satyagraha and the secular concerns he posed merged to form his philosophy. The result is an innovative blend of religion and modern concerns.

Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence has been a major influence in political movements for centuries. His non-violence campaign, called “Satyagraha”, was crucial for overcoming colonialism in India.

Buddhism

If you’re looking for a subject for your dissertation, Buddhism philosophy may be a good choice.  The dissertation you choose should focus on the theory of Buddha-nature or an aspect of it that is particularly interesting to you.

If you’re studying Buddhist philosophy, there are many different sources to choose from. You can use a Buddhist treatise that explores the nature of existence, like the “Ksanabhangasiddhi-Anavayatmika” by Jeson Woo (11th century). You can also study other works in Buddhism philosophy, like the “Sanskrit-Mahayana” by Aristotle.

A critical Buddhist chapter develops the theme of compassion and radical contingency. It elaborates a paradigm for comparative scholarship, incorporating insights from Western philosophical hermeneutics and pragmatism. In addition, the chapter explores the relationship between scholarship and religion, examining the reconnection of religious consciousness to social conscience.

Western philosophy

The worst philosophical sin, of course, is to ignore the work of another philosopher. It is not enough to agree or disagree; you must explain why you think that way. It is also a sin to pretend that another philosopher does not exist. This course aims to teach students how to engage in dialogue with other philosophers while adhering to Western standards.

In Western philosophy, you will study the pre-Socratics, Aristotle, Kant, and continental rationalism. The main concepts in this discipline include ethical theories and concepts of good and evil. You will also examine the nature of truth and right, and the relation between facts and logic. Finally, you will examine the nature of truth and knowledge and how to judge its value.

Later, the Romans took up the tradition, forming several important schools that included Stoicism and Seneca. Later, in the Middle Ages, the most influential philosophers were St. Thomas Aquinas and Aristotle. Finally, the Enlightenment period brought Western philosophy to a point where reason began to take the place of religion.
